Haiti Is Yet Another Example Of How When Society Breaks Down Evil Comes Out To Play

Haiti has become yet another example (just like New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina) of how when society breaks down, evil comes out to play.  We have all seen pictures or video footage of the machete-wielding gangs and looters that have been ravaging Port-au-Prince since the earthquake.  If not for the U.S. and U.N. troops that have been inserted into Haiti, the whole nation would be an utter madhouse at this point.  But the point of this article is not to dump on Haiti.  The truth is that we have seen this kind of thing all over the world when society breaks down.  After all, have we forgotten the horrors in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina so quickly?  The thin veneer of civilization that we all take for granted every day only exists as long as society continues to function normally.  Once society breaks down, the truth is that the evil in humanity surfaces very quickly.  When humans feel their very survival is threatened, many of them will resort to all kinds of things.

But you would like to think that the people of Haiti would choose this moment to pull together as a nation.  After all, nearly 170,000 dead bodies have been recovered in so far.  If there was any moment for neighbors to reach out and help each other in Haiti, you think that this would be it.

Instead, we are seeing very much the opposite.  Looting and violence are absolutely rampant.  Criminals are taking advantage of the blackout in Haiti’s capital to harass and rape women and young girls.  In fact, yesterday Haiti’s national police chief Mario Andresol said this about all the raping that is going on….

“With the blackout that’s befallen the Haitian capital, bandits are taking advantage to harass and rape women and young girls under the tents.”

How sick is that?

But not only that, Haitian officials also fear that human trafficking and the sale of human organs will become rampant in the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake.  You see, the breakdown of Haitian society is not only bringing out the evil in the people who live there.  It is also attracting the wickedness of outsiders who are eager to exploit them.

Speaking on CNN on Wednesday night, Haiti’s Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said that he has received reports of Haitian children being sold and that he is also convinced that human organs are being taken from victims of the earthquake and are being sold for profit.

How low do you have to be to go to Haiti and harvest the organs of dead earthquake victims and sell them for profit?

How low do you have to be to go to Haiti and buy children that have been orphaned by the earthquake?

But it is happening.

According to one report, orphans in Haiti are being offered for sale to foreigners for as little as 50 dollars.

This is the true face of humanity.

Just like after Hurricane Katrina.

Just like we have seen countless other times around the globe when society breaks down.

When the thin veneer of civilization gets removed, the true nature of humanity is revealed.

And it is really ugly.

Do not overestimate the character of the people where you live either.

When society breaks down in your neck of the woods, do you believe that some of them won’t act like animals just to survive?

Don’t bet on it.

You better get ready while there is still time to prepare.

Excellent post. Survival kits are not enough, folks. One of the very best books on this topic is Mary Kaldor’s Odl Wars, New Wars. Fascinating analysis of modern societal collapse in developing countries and the rise of genocide. This is what we should be preparing for in some western countries. I also highly recommend John Robb’s Brave New War, and Lind’s work on “fourth generation war.” Full-spectrum preparation requires you to be an asset, not a resource. Survival kits and food caches will end up in someone else’s trunk if you try to go it alone. Build a resilient community, that’s the mantra of preppers and neosurvivalists.

Once society falls, the evil in man comes out. Without law and order, we can expect man and woman, to revert to an animal state. This is expected and is the result of some twisted ideas of what is needed to survive. Law and order prevails only when those with unlawful thoughts fear the law and know they will pay for their actions. Simply put, those that do not have will take from those who have and the weaker they are, the easier the job. Some of the evil folks would not consider themselves in that light, they think are fighting for survival, but I argue otherwise. I think it’s where the adage, “Only the strong survive” comes from. Be strong, but also be prepared–for anything.
