If you ask some people, winterizing their home involves stringing colorful lights inside and out and dusting off the old plastic snowman or Santa stowed in the garage. But true winterizing is much more. If not handled correctly, winter can mean more than the grass dying, birds migrating and trees trading in leaves for snow and ice. It can also wreak havoc on your budget and leave you in the cold.
Take Care of Drafts
Nothing drives up your energy bills more than drafts, and that is why it is so important to identify these before the temperatures drop. Sometimes there are gaps that need caulking. Other times windows are not as energy efficient as they should be, which means it is either time to replace them or install plastic over the windows for an extra layer of protection against the outdoor elements.
Get Help With Heating
It’s also crucial that you ensure the heating system within your home works as well as it possibly can, Furnace filters should be cleaned or replaced, and you should verify that your furnace is in good shape and ready to get you through the winter months.
If you have ceiling fans, check if they are capable of running in the reverse direction. The counterclockwise motion will help keep you cool in the summer months, but when the mercury dips, a clockwise motion will help you make the most of the warmth in the room.
It can also save a lot of energy to seal off heating ducts that are in rooms that don’t get used much.
Beware of the Dark
In most areas, winter doesn’t just mean freezing temperatures. It means there are many more hours of darkness in a day, and this darkness can leave you and your family vulnerable. Especially if you work outside the home, it is vital to talk to your family about making sure outside lights are turned on after dark, and be extra certain that kids are not walking around alone in the dark.
Many people go as far as installing a security system, such as a Lifeshield alarm system, that will help them keep an eye on things whether it’s day-to-day activities or in preparation for a winter getaway.
Clean Up and Warm Your Heart
Finally, consider getting rid of things around the house that you don’t need or use. Chances are, some of those items taking up space in the back of your closet can be a lifesaver to someone less fortunate. Check around your neighborhood for places accepting used clothes, toys or even furniture. Knowing that you are helping others will benefit your own heart and set a good example for your family. Besides getting the tax write-off, you’ll also creates more space in your home.
