An Unusual Perspective

An Unusual Perspective, by Surviving Survivalism

Some may call it a self imposed exile, but several years ago we separated ourselves from so-called “society”. It’s a 90 minute ride to even get to a town from here, mostly across dirt ranch road, some of it “primitive” (white knuckles). About a year ago, our Ford Bronco died, and we got swindled out of $3000 for a replacement truck that…well, long story, but suffice it to say we haven’t had a vehicle since then. We haven’t left the ranch in about a year. The handful of times we had visitors since then, they have been so kind as to bring us up some small amount of groceries for a “treat” or two, but we gained something very special in that time – perspective.

It’s not like we’ve always lived so remotely and we don’t know what the other side of the world is like. Many of the past 25 years we lived in suburbia, raising our kids and working our successful business. We traversed the country more times than I can count as we drove to the seminars we taught, kids in tow, giving them a better education than they could have gotten in a classroom. We stayed in major cities when we, too, were involved in the (Read more....)

Living Without Electricity After A Disaster

Recently, large parts of the North East were without power for a long period of time due to storm damage. In my life, I have experienced a couple of weeks with no electricity after a storm and I know what it is like to suffer through that. However, you can make it livable and even enjoyable if you just change your mindset. Here are some things you need to remember:
People lived before electricity. I know it seems like a foreign concept to you, but people did actually survive before electricity was invented. In fact, they probably lived in your town before electricity was installed. That means that you can survive and even thrive without electricity. All you have to do is use a little common sense.

Cook with fire. You should have propane or charcoal or some other form of fire cooking ready to go in case of emergency. I know that some of you have a gas stove… but even that could go out during a disaster. If you are cooking, make the most of your heat (Read more....)

Setting Up A Getaway Cabin On A Budget

If you have already begun putting food storage aside for the tough times that lay ahead, then it’s likely you have thought about a getaway cabin. This is especially true if you live in a city, or a heavily populated suburb or town.  Many of us have experienced financial set backs over the past few years, and the dream of a cabin with a well and enough property to grow a garden may appear to be an impossibility at first blush. The good news is that’s not always the case. A basic, no frills cabin is all you need. In fact, a no frills cabin is preferable over a showpiece that will draw the attention of looters.

If You Can’t Buy, Then Rent

If you can’t afford to purchase a getaway cabin, consider renting. This narrows your choices, but better to have a safe haven than wishful thinking.

Pool Resources

If you have friends or family members who are likewise interested in a getaway cabin, consider joining forces with them to begin searching for a rental or the outright purchase of a cabin. As long as there is enough floor space to sleep everyone, it will be a slice of Heaven if ever conditions arise where a getaway cabin is (Read more....)

Will Gold Be Of Any Value When Society Falls Apart And Descends Into Anarchy?

Collapse Of SocietyOne of the great debates among survivalists is regarding the value of gold. One the one hand, gold is one of the few things that will hold its value when the U.S. dollar collapses. On the other hand, you can’t eat or drink gold. That is the position that the maker of the film posted below takes. He advocates focusing on the things that you will actually need: food, water, shelter and protection. But is he being overly dramatic? If so, what kind of future should we all be preparing for? One where there is some level of law and order and where gold and silver will be of value, or one where law and order have completely vanished and the land is ruled by roaming gangs?

Watch the video below and post a comment with your thoughts on this debate. Do you think that gold will be of value in the future that is ahead for us?  We certainly do not agree with a lot of things in this video, but it is thought provoking so we thought that we would post it….

Survivalists

1 (2)2The current economic crisis has spawned a whole new breed of survivalists.  Rather than holing up in a bunker, living off the land and waiting for  “the end of the world as we know it” these new survivalists are average Americans who see the chaos going on around them and who believe that they won’t be able to depend on the government to take care of them.

In a recent article, the Houston Chronicle reported on this new breed of survivalists.  One survivalist they featured is named Jack Spirko.  Jack owns his own media company, he is married to a successful nurse and he has a son in college. He also has two dogs and lives in a beautiful house with a pool in Arlington, Texas.

That sounds like a very normal guy, right?

But the truth is that Jack Spirko is a survivalist.

For several years, Jack has been busy stockpiling food, water, gas, guns and ammunition.

The Houston Chronicle quoted Spirko as saying this about his lifestyle: “I have a (Read more....)
