What to do Before and After a Flood By Scott Patrick Humphrey
Climate change is a reality that is affecting many of the eco-systems all around the planet, and weather patterns have had considerable changes over the past decade due to the increases moisture in the atmosphere. Thanks to global corporate pollution we have had a massive spike in temperatures as well as a drastic increase in the loss on the Antarctic ice sheet. The effect has caused massive damages to communities all around the country, and we need to stay prepared for more in the future.
As summer approaches, one might be tempted into passivity by the unfurling of lawn chairs, the cracking open of beer bottles and the hum of air conditioning units, but the coming of summer also signals a real need for preparedness as for much of the country it signifies the start of hurricane season. Beginning around the 1st of June, hurricane season can wreak havoc on coastal cities and homeowners alike. However, the real danger of hurricanes lies not as much with the strong winds or rock-solid hail, but rather with the flooding that it causes.

Haiti has become yet another example (just like New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina) of how when society breaks down, evil comes out to play. We have all seen pictures or video footage of the machete-wielding gangs and looters that have been ravaging Port-au-Prince since the earthquake. If not for the U.S. and U.N. troops that have been inserted into Haiti, the whole nation would be an utter madhouse at this point. But the point of this article is not to dump on Haiti. The truth is that we have seen this kind of thing all over the world when society breaks down. After all, have we forgotten the horrors in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina so quickly? The thin veneer of civilization that we all take for granted every day only exists as long as society continues to function normally. Once society breaks down, the truth is that the evil in humanity surfaces very quickly. When humans feel their very survival is threatened, many of them will resort to all kinds of things.
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti is being called the worst natural disaster in at least a decade. In fact, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is already calling it a worse disaster than the Asian tsunami of several years ago that killed so many thousands upon thousands of people. Authorities are desperately trying to get aid to the survivors in Haiti but they are being severely hampered
There are few natural disasters that can be as frightening as a hurricane. After the catastrophic damage that Hurricane Katrina caused, none of us has an excuse for being lazy in our preparations.
