What to do Before and After a Flood

What to do Before and After a Flood By Scott Patrick Humphrey

Climate change is a reality that is affecting many of the eco-systems all around the planet, and weather patterns have had considerable changes over the past decade due to the increases moisture in the atmosphere.  Thanks to global corporate pollution we have had a massive spike in temperatures as well as a drastic increase in the loss on the Antarctic ice sheet.  The effect has caused massive damages to communities all around the country, and we need to stay prepared for more in the future.

As summer approaches, one might be tempted into passivity by the unfurling of lawn chairs, the cracking open of beer bottles and the hum of air conditioning units, but the coming of summer also signals a real need for preparedness as for much of the country it signifies the start of hurricane season. Beginning around the 1st of June, hurricane season can wreak havoc on coastal cities and homeowners alike. However, the real danger of hurricanes lies not as much with the strong winds or rock-solid hail, but rather with the flooding that it causes.

Whereas broken windows and fallen trees can be repaired with effort, flooding can be much more complicated to tackle, often requiring the need (Read more....)

10 Ways To Help During A Disaster Relief Effort

In the aftermath of a disaster, it’s only natural that we all want to lend a hand. However, it’s not always easy to know how to accomplish this goal. With a few simple tips in mind, everyone can discover how they can assist the victims of any type of catastrophe.

1. Give money. This can be the simplest and most effective way to assist in the aftermath of disaster. However, always donate with care. It is a disheartening fact that many fraudulent “charities” spring up after disasters. Donate only to charities you know and trust. You’ll rest easier knowing your money is going where it is needed most.

2. Donate items. After a disaster, the victims need many basic necessities. Food, water, laundry detergent, toothbrushes and other everyday items are in short supply. Although it’s easy to imagine what might be needed, resist the temptation to ship anything that is unsolicited. Instead, do some research about what is required by the victims. Many relief efforts are hindered by the constant arrival of unnecessary donations. Find out which organizations are helping out in the disaster area. Visit their websites or call their head offices to find out what’s really needed (Read more....)

Haiti Is Yet Another Example Of How When Society Breaks Down Evil Comes Out To Play

Haiti has become yet another example (just like New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina) of how when society breaks down, evil comes out to play.  We have all seen pictures or video footage of the machete-wielding gangs and looters that have been ravaging Port-au-Prince since the earthquake.  If not for the U.S. and U.N. troops that have been inserted into Haiti, the whole nation would be an utter madhouse at this point.  But the point of this article is not to dump on Haiti.  The truth is that we have seen this kind of thing all over the world when society breaks down.  After all, have we forgotten the horrors in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina so quickly?  The thin veneer of civilization that we all take for granted every day only exists as long as society continues to function normally.  Once society breaks down, the truth is that the evil in humanity surfaces very quickly.  When humans feel their very survival is threatened, many of them will resort to all kinds of things.

But you would like to think that the people of Haiti would choose this moment to pull together as a nation.  After all, (Read more....)

How Soon Are Scientists Expecting An Earthquake Similar To The One In Haiti To Strike The U.S.? Sooner Than You Might Think

Earth ChangesThe 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti is being called the worst natural disaster in at least a decade.  In fact, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is already calling it a worse disaster than the Asian tsunami of several years ago that killed so many thousands upon thousands of people.  Authorities are desperately trying to get aid to the survivors in Haiti but they are being severely hampered by the chaos ravaging that nation in the aftermath of the earthquake.  Looting is rampant, people are burning piles of dead bodies, the sound of gunfire is everywhere and gangs of machete-wielding young men are roaming the streets.

So can what is happening in Haiti happen in the United States?

Of course it can.

Or did you forget about Hurricane Katrina?

The truth is that most areas in the United States are only about 9 meals away from anarchy.

When people get desperate they will do just about anything for survival.  We like to think of ourselves as so “advanced” and so “civilized”, but the truth is that an emergency situation can turn most people into wild animals very quickly.

So what are the odds of a massive earthquake like the one that devastated Haiti hitting the U.S. any time (Read more....)

What To Do If A Hurricane Is Coming

2007hurricane_5006a00d834515b2069e200e54f55b0328834-800wiThere are few natural disasters that can be as frightening as a hurricane.  After the catastrophic damage that Hurricane Katrina caused, none of us has an excuse for being lazy in our preparations.

Preparing for a hurricane can literally mean the difference between life and death.  The following are some simple guidelines that you can use to help get yourself prepared for a hurricane…..

If you live in a hurricane prone area, begin to prepare for a storm even before hurricane season starts.  Trying to get prepared once you hear a storm is coming can be difficult and can lead to mistakes.

Prepare an emergency disaster kit in case you must evacuate.  Make sure that your kit includes a first aid kit, any medications that your family will need, drinking water, sleeping bags, canned food (with a can opener), flashlights and a radio.

In addition, it is a very good idea to have your most important documents ready to take with you in a waterproof container.  You don’t want them getting destroyed by the (Read more....)
