Flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and earthquakes can strike at any time and often with little warning. In 2012, nearly 125 million people worldwide were victims of natural disasters, and in the United States, weather-related disasters caused about $157 million in damages.

The time to prepare for a disaster is not before or just after it hits – the best time to prepare is now. Making your own emergency survival kit and having a plan in place could save your life when disaster strikes. Take a look at these tips for how to make your own DIY emergency kit:

Food: For an emergency survival kit, you should have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food items for each member of your household, including pets. Canned foods, pre-packaged and dry foods like rice and beans are the easiest to store and pack. You can easily store dry rice and beans in mason jars, empty milk jugs and empty 2-liter soda bottles. Choose foods that are high in calories and nutrition. Peanut butter, nuts, tuna, soup, crackers, protein bars and trail mix are easy to pack and offer important nutrients.

Water: For survival situations, (Read more....)

Should You Purchase Terrorism Insurance? http://disasterandemergencysurvival.com/archives/should-you-purchase-terrorism-insurance http://disasterandemergencysurvival.com/archives/should-you-purchase-terrorism-insurance#comments Sun, 17 Feb 2013 02:41:22 +0000 http://disasterandemergencysurvival.com/?p=1362 The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were one of the biggest tragedies in American history. That horrific incident happened over a decade ago, but most Americans are still terrified of the possibility of another terrorist attack.

Many people don’t realize that their homeowner’s insurance policy may not protect them from a possible terrorist attack. Most insurers will not cover damages caused by acts of war or nuclear attacks. Terrorist attacks are a gray area, which many insurers may try to exploit. Nobody has had to challenge an insurance company in court, so there is no precedent on whether or not your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover any damages arising from an act of terror. Some insurers have expressly excluded terrorism from their coverage.

You may be safer if you purchase a terrorism insurance policy. Here are some general guidelines that you should follow to decide whether or not you should purchase a terrorism insurance policy.

Are You a Business or Homeowner?

Congress passed the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act of 2002 shortly after 9/11. This new law was specifically designated to protect businesses in the event of a terrorist attack. However, the new law may not protect homeowners. Some experts (Read more....)

Don’t Fight the System http://disasterandemergencysurvival.com/archives/dont-fight-the-system http://disasterandemergencysurvival.com/archives/dont-fight-the-system#comments Tue, 20 Nov 2012 01:18:54 +0000 http://disasterandemergencysurvival.com/?p=1124 By – SurvivingSurvivalism.com

As of Nov. 15th, 2012, all 50 states had petitions in place to secede from the “Union”.  Some of the alternative news media have jumped on the wagon, vying for first place to lead the charge.

Fighting the system to “fix” (or resurrect) it, is the same as fighting over who gets the tenderloin steak off a dead and rotting cow.   For many of you I am sure this will be an extremely radical statement.  But if that system lead us to the morass of greed and evil in which we are today, wouldn’t it be better to step aside while it collapses and help lead society to a better paradigm, based more on caring about others than about squeezing the last penny out of some useless consumer product?

Just what is “the system”?  The system is an (Read more....)

Why Are You Trying to Survive?  With the news being what it is, the world has now come to the point at which a huge shake-up is undeniable E to anyone who has 2 cents worth of brain matter between their ears.  So  hoards are joining the stampede to become “survivalists”.  The movement has even spurred the development of the “survival industry“, with commercials now being played on mainstream media stations for freeze-dried storage foods and solar generators.

There is an old saying, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will do.”  So if you are going to go the path of being a “survivalist”, first you’ll want to know where you are going E and why.

Plenty of alternative news outlets are trumpeting that “martial law” is soon to be implemented (Read more....)

Natural Disasters: How to Shop for Survival http://disasterandemergencysurvival.com/archives/natural-disasters-how-to-shop-for-survival http://disasterandemergencysurvival.com/archives/natural-disasters-how-to-shop-for-survival#comments Fri, 10 Aug 2012 19:31:24 +0000 http://disasterandemergencysurvival.com/?p=929

No one knows when a natural disaster or emergency will strike. We have all seen the television shows that portray people trying to surviving in the wilderness, surviving plane crashes and natural disasters that can occur. Seeing it on television and having it happen to you are two different things. We must be prepared! Supplies for emergency preparedness should include shopping for an additional source of shelter, food, sanitation and hygiene, light, communication, first aid, water and survival kits. Being prepared by shopping for survival items is necessary so that you and your family can survive days or weeks until you can be rescued or return to a normal state of living. So, what should you shop for?

Food

Natural disasters can last a few days, a few weeks, or even months depending on the disaster and circumstances. After seeing some natural disasters such as earthquakes, the tsunami, and hurricanes like Katrina, it’s safe to have one to 12 months worth of food in storage as part of your survival supplies. The type of food to buy would be freeze dried, dehydrated and canned goods that don’t need refrigeration. (Read more....)
