To develop and maintain a survival garden you need to reclaim the skills and knowledge of our forefathers who were without technology to rely on. Moon, sun and weather cycles for growing food. Soil conditioning. Harnessing natural irrigation. Companion planting for pest control. Mulching and composting techniques. How plants grow and what ripen when. How to use and store your harvest.
To provide food all year round you need to practise succession-planting. Learn what grows all the year round in your local area. Example, In Australia, lettuce, carrots, beets, spinach, onions, leeks, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, thyme, marjoram, oregano, lemon balm and edible geraniums can be grown in our garden all year round. Thus keeping us fed.
Our forty years of experience has led to my husband and I being called upon to become “Sustainable Lifestyle Educators”. We have a mudbrick house, which is constructed and furnished with materials from 60 buildings. We have solar power, and an organic edible landscape with chooks and ducks.

Judith.
