The Saxons and Normans went to war over metals including but not limited to gold. Even if gold doesn't have montary value it will have a usefullness. It's maleable and very easy to work with. So cups and plates could be made quite easily out of it. IF enough could be found. I think it will all depend on the severity of the collapse of civilisation.

With the enormous debt the United States carries, it is entirely possible that the entire system could collapse. Would gold be valuable in that situation?
